Zoology
About the job
Zoology is the study of animals in their natural habitat. Two branches of zoology exist, fieldwork and office/lab work. Zoologists study the genetics, diseases, and life process of animals. Lab workers determine the environmental effects of present and potential use of land and water habitats.
Its also called / What do they do?
- Animal Behaviorist
- Animal Biologist
- Aquatic Biologist
- Assistant Research Scientist
- Black Bear Project Leader
- Conservation Resources Management Biologist
- Cryptozoologist
- Dolphin Researcher
- Ecologist
- Entomologist
What do they do?
Study animals in their natural habitat - I've always wanted to go to different placed and observe them in their natural habitat. I want to know how they develop and behave when in familiar surrounding.Disseminate Information - I love to speak to the public and personally I think Im pretty good at it. I would love to talk to schools and organizations about the finding that scientists encounter.
Inform and Respond - Somewhat like a ranger, ever since I began my scouting the job of a ranger seemed pretty cool and a ranger protects his or her given environment.
coordinators- These zoologists oversee prevention programs to control the outbreak of wildlife diseases.
Lab workers - Some lab workers analyze the characteristics of animals to identify and classify them.
Important qualities/education
Zoologist must have a love for animals and nature, they must have good people skills and communication skills. Zoologist are researchers and they must tell others of their findings so they must be social. People who work in this occupation generally prize Achievement, but also value Recognition and Working Conditions in their jobs.
Education Required - Most of these occupations require graduate school, they require a Ph.D., M.D., or JD.

California State University - Long Beach
Annual Tuition - 17,710 Monterey Bay - Tuition, 17,621 I can definitely see myself with this job in the future. This is my mindset is set on this career but like most people I might end up changing my major. However I do think that my career will be on this sort of track. This assignment helped me look into what my career choice is in depth. It demonstrated where I can go and be with this type of career. I really enjoyed this project and I wish other grades to do something similar to this a lot sooner. |
Zoologist work in one of two fields. They either study animals on the field or work in labs to determine an animal's sickness and finding solutions to problems in the wild. Animals are observed and studied for their habits and contributions to the environment. If an animal's population begins to decrease zoologists interfere and protect the population from dipping to low. As a kid I always wanted to work with animals in the field but now that I'm older a job in the lab begins to seem more and more appealing.
Pros:
Ive always wanted to work with animals as a child and becoming a zoologists helps me up and person with animals.
I travel to different areas observing animals in their natural habitats. These areas include desert, mountains, and forests. I love to travel and like to be surrounded by nature. This would be an amazing opportunity for me.
Zoologists can look forward to growth and job opportunities in their field over the coming years. The Bureau of Labor Statistics says the employment of biological scientists, which includes zoologists, is projected to increase much faster than the average for all jobs. The advancement of biotechnological research will spur this growth, as will increased government efforts to protect wildlife species.
The average salary for all zoologists is much higher, however, according to the BLS. The average as of May 2009 was about $29 per hour, or $60,700 per year. The top 25 percent of earners were making over $71,900, and the top 10 percent, over $93,000.
Saving the planet and its many creatures is very important, so zoologists know their work is valuable. In order to protect endangered and threatened species, or just to keep animal populations stable, zoologists help enforce and create environmental regulations. For instance, a zoologist might conduct a study to look for ways to prevent chemicals from being dumped into a lake or oceans. Another might work for the government to make sure agribusiness is following the law and disposing of animal waste properly.
Cons:
Although traveling can be a pro it can also be a con. If I do develop a family by the time I have a family and children it would be very difficult to have close ties. Zoologist constantly travel and are sent away for extended periods of time. Getting the chance to visit faraway locales for your work can certainly be a plus, but it’s not always comfortable: depending on the demands of your research, you could spend your days in the scalding desert or on icy tundra with subzero temperatures.
Its dangerous when working with large animals. These animals aren't tamed and being observed in the wild. These animals aren't trained, they rely on instincts. Recent deaths of such well-known wildlife researchers as Timothy Treadwell and Steve Irwin have added an air of danger and risk to the activities of animal researchers that is perhaps undeserved. Still, the object of such research or employment can be unpredictable and at times dangerous.
The environment won't always be pleasant and zoologist don't always have a stable shelter. For instance get close to animals for observation, you'll often go without basic comforts.
OBSERVATIONS
The occupation that I chose research for this project is zoology. Something that I learned about the career that I chose is that there is no BA or BS for zoology instead there are graduate schools with a Zoology Department offer interdepartmental programs leading to M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. That means that I would probably have to be in school for 6 years or so, which I don’t mind but I was hoping to finish school in 4 years. But I’m interested in working in this field even though I’m not surprised that this occupation requires math because everything requires math. Something I’m not very good at, but I’m not letting that get in the way of me pursuing this occupation. I didn’t know that zoology is also called cryptozoologist which is the study of and search for animals and especially legendary animals (such as a Sasquatch) usually in order to evaluate the possibility of their existence. I had no idea that there was even an actual field for something like that. I do see myself as a zoologist in 10 years because I’m interested in informing and responding to public regarding wildlife and conservation issues, such as plant identification, hunting ordinances, and nuisance wildlife.

It Is Also Called;
Anatomic Pathology: The word Anatomic derives from the word anatomy and the word Pathology is the study of diseases. Anatomic Pathologists are specialists in examining organs and tissue through macroscopic, microscopic, biochemical, immunologic and molecular examination.
Autopsy Pathology: Autopsy Pathologists are pathologist who specialize in performing autopsy in order to find the cause of death and determine in whether the death was a suicide, homicide or accident.
Clinical pathology: Clinical Pathologists are pathologists who specialize in laboratory analysis of body fluids such as blood, urine and tissue homogenates.
What They Do:
1. Review cases by analyzing autopsies, laboratory findings, or case investigation reports.
2. Communicate pathologic findings to surgeons or other physicians.
3. Write pathology reports summarizing analyses, results, and conclusions.
4. Examine microscopic samples to identify diseases or other abnormalities.
5. Consult with physicians about ordering and interpreting tests or providing treatments.
Important Qualities:
There are many qualities that one must have in order to succeed in this line of work. Not many people have the tolerance or patience that is required for this career path. People who go into this career path must want to do it or else they will be utterly disgusted when it comes to the dissection of the cadavers. There are many skills requires such as tolerance, patience, well organized, strategic planning, leadership techniques, and well educated on information and techniques needed to diagnose and treat human injuries, diseases, and deformities.
Education Required:
1. Must major in pathology, forensic science, microbiology, biology, or biochemistry.
2. Must receive a masters or a Ph.D (Graduates with a Ph.D receive a higher salary)
3. Must go to medical school and graduate
Wages:
The annual wage for a pathologist ranges from 189,000 to 249,000.
Common Majors:
Biology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Forensic Science and Molecular Biology
COST OF COLLEGE
University of California, Davis provides a Pathology major that will guide you through the path of becoming a Pathologist. University of California, Davis is the only University in California that has the major Pathology which is why I recommend this school.
- The annual tuition is 36,755, room and board is 13,503 and annual financial aid would be 16,238.

Drawbacks:
Depression is very common in medical professions. Suicide is the result of untreated depression and accessibility to lethal drugs. Physicians have easy access to lethal drugs which makes it easier for them to obtain the drugs necessary in order to end their lives.
Social devolution is very common among pathologists. Pathologist are exposed to death on a daily basis, which leads to social devolution in other words they develop an antisocial personality. Many pathologist spend most of their time in a lab with one other person or alone and most of them grow accustom to the silence that they rather keep to themselves than interacting with others.
Many pathologist become desensitized to death. Pathologist are exposed to death on a daily basis that it becomes apart of their lives. A pathologist's job revolves around death. It is something they must grow accustom to in order to due their job right.
Benefits:
Learning the structure of the human body and its functions. Pathologist understand the structure of the human body and its functions. Pathologist also know how each body system works with one another. Learning how your own body works is a benefit because only then will you be able to truly take care of yourself.
Many careers in the medical field require the same level of education. In the process of becoming a pathologist, if you were to change your mind, you could become a physician or a surgeon. This career contains many classes that if you which to change you have a variety of careers to choose from if you wish to change your career path.
By become a pathologist you will not only develop observational skills but you will also improve your problem solving skills. These skills are very important and are used on a daily basis and with this you will be able to address situation that require you to problem solve. Not only will you be able to use these skills as a pathologist but it can be used in other careers.
You must have extreme patience when it comes to examining corpses. If you lack this characteristic this career path will help you develop those skills. Many jobs and situations require patience and the sooner you develop this characteristic the better you will be able to analyze and tolerate.

My Observation:
There are many things that I knew about my career path. I understood the education requirements and the qualities needed to be a successful pathologist and the training required. What I learned from this project was the different types of pathologists. I learned that there is a an autopsy pathologist who specializes in autopsies and an anatomic pathologist specializes in examining organs and tissue through macroscopic, microscopic, biochemical, immunologic and molecular examination. I found out that many medical professions require almost the same classes a pathologist must take in order to become a pathologist. I have been looking forward to this career for several years now and there have been many people who have told me to follow a different career which only makes me want to follow my career even further. I did enjoy this project because it gave me time out of my day to research and analyze my pros and cons. Although my career has many cons there are also many benefits and know I have a better understanding of future decisions.
